Manifesto.

An On-going Manifesto…

Creativity and imagination.

a. I believe creativity is the key to design. I believe to be a designer you have to have creativity and be able to channel it to make all your work interesting and aesthetically pleasing as possible.

b. I believe you have to let your imagination run free like when you were a child, when anything is possible in your mind. This is a brilliant and fun advantage to have when you’re a designer, to be able to imagine anything and create anything in your mind. I believe this will help you have unlimited ideas and produce great work as a designer. It’s also great to be able to imagine your ideas in your head and move, manipulate and develop them ready to transfer them for other people to see as sketches.

Ideas.

I believe ideas are the start of every design. You must be able to translate your ideas on to paper or into writing to be able to work with them better. Ideas create the final work. Sketching is a great way to get your ideas down on paper and to help develop them further stage-by-stage.

Inspiration and influence.

a. Inspiration can come from anywhere or anything. You must be open to everything, take everything in. To gather Inspiration is extremely important to me, without inspiration it would be very hard to create any interesting work.

b. It’s important to look at other peoples work, weather its in design or in anything and let it influences you whether its in a good or a bad way this all helps you develop your own styles.

c. Also let the world and everything around you influence and inspire you, different styles from different countries, a raindrop trickling down a window anything can inspire and influence you and create great ideas and work.

Development.

I believe it’s very important to develop each idea as far as it can go. This way you will have a lot to work with when deciding what you want to use and what you don’t. Never throw anything away. Keep everything even if you don’t think it’ll be any use at the time, it might be later on in a project or for a different project. Sketching is a great way to develop ideas, and to keep a sketchbook and manipulate thing by hand like paper. Development can also take place on the computer, although its very important to print drafts/proofs to see that it looks like you want it to on paper, the computer can be deceiving, it might look good on screen but not what you thought on paper.

Printmaking.

Printmaking is a great way to explore ideas, in a fun and hands on way. Working with printmaking can produce effects you cant on the computer or you wouldn’t have thought to create.

Research.

Research is the base to all projects.  I believe you have to research all you can about a project to make all you can of it. If you have no research you can start a project because you’ll have virtually nothing to work with.

Learn.

Learn by experimenting. Mistakes aren’t mistakes they’re a process of learning and growing as a designer. Sometimes the mistake might be the exact idea you didn’t know you were looking for till it happens. Don’t be afraid to be ambitious. Don’t always stick to what you know, it’s always good to move out your comfort zone every now and again try something new.

Knowledge.

I think it is important to have knowledge of the computer programs that I use. In this day and age it’s very important to know all you can about the computer programs you use like; photoshop, indesign, illustrator and more. With this knowledge I believe you can make your ideas on paper exactly what you want on the computer. A good way to get knowledge of the computer program you use is online tutorial that take you through step by step. No matter what the tutorial I’m sure it will come in handy at some time. It’s always good to know more about the program your working with than less.

Aspirations and dreams.

Aim high. Never think that want you want cant be done. Every effect can be achieved. Always believe you can be whatever you want to be, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Passion.

I am very passionate about all the work I do and put a lot of effort into each project. I believe you have to put your all into each project to make the most of it and get the best results. I believe you have to be passionate about what you do in life, you must enjoy your work and be able to push yourself to do better and better all the time.

Problem-solving.

“Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose.” Charles Eames

Problem-solving is a vital part of graphic design. I believe a lot of Graphic design is about problem solving, how to make something communicate the message you want, as well as making it aesthetically pleasing. Also when working on a project you have to constantly work out how to make things fit where you want them to, what fonts will work, what colours to use and will work well with each other and much more. All this is problem solving and I believe this is an important aspect of design that must be coped with and worked well with.

Typography

I think that typography is a very important part of graphic design. Typography is the written communication of graphic designers. It must be used in the right way. There are certain rules to be followed with typography, but rules are meant to be broken and don’t have to be followed but its wise to take them into consideration and depending on what you want to achieve these rules should mostly followed.

Style.

Don’t be afraid to try your own style, just because it’s not what’s out there or what’s ‘in’ at the moment doesn’t mean it wont be liked and appreciated. To have your own style and to stand out is better than going along with the fashion and blending in to the crowd.

Client.

I think that when working for a client you should work with them to get exactly what they want. You always want your designs to achieve the right effect desired.

Target audience.

Target audience is very important when designing; you must always take who your audience is into consideration. Different styles and approaches must be used for different target audiences.

Grids.

Grids are the guidelines to design, they are not the be all and end all. Just because it fit with the grid doesn’t make it good design. Good design uses grids at the guidelines and uses the eye to determined if its right or not.
